One year after submitting the declaration of support, the participating companies are expected to report on the practical steps they have taken to further the progress on implementing the Codex. Measures taken in a reporting period display the company‘ s involvement. Continuous measures are labelled accordingly. The progress report will include up to one page of explanations in a simple format, and a list of two to three pages, covering the ten guidelines. For each of the ten guidelines‘ area of action, a statement is made about the progress of implementation, and measures are listed, for example as suggested in the Guidelines for the sustainable organisation of events by the BMU (Federal Environment Ministry). Many companies will not have fulfilled some areas of action, or they may not have started addressing them. There may also be practical obstacles for individual areas. Such relevant restrictive specifications are openly explained and will therefore support the overall credibility of the company. The vital point is: every first progress report is a good start. The progress report can be integrated in the annual report or the sustainability report, or it may be published on the company website. The report is to be regularly updated by the company. The finished report may be used to start a dialogue with stakeholders.
Set Goals and measure results
Companies wanting to voluntarily go one step further may also report on self-set goals and measurable results according to the individual guiding principles. Formulating goals is an effective and easily understandable way of displaying plans and their expected outcomes. Whenever possible, goals and results should be measured in a quantitative rather than a qualitative way. Here, references to recognised sustainability standards or certifications with indicators and measurement parameters can be made. Parameters obtained through a certification may be transferred to the progress report. The associations will provide a practical guide for producing the progress report and for measuring goals and actions taken in time.
